ESRC Wales Doctoral Training Centre

Postgraduate research: PhD funding & advanced training via the ESRC Wales Doctoral Training Partnership

Human Geography at Swansea has secured a coveted place in the UK-wide network of doctoral training partnerships as part of the prestigious ESRC Wales Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP). The Wales DTP has a considerable amount of funding available for PhD scholarships in the Human Geography pathway (as well as scholarships for other social sciences).

The Wales DTP trains top-level social scientists across Wales on a range of issues affecting society today. It is a collaboration between Cardiff University (the lead institution), Aberystwyth University, Bangor University, Cardiff Metropolitan University, the University of Gloucestershire and Swansea University. We are building on and enhancing a track record of successful social science doctoral training collaboration in Wales – the DTP and its predecessor (the ESRC Wales Doctoral Training Centre) have offered around 50 new postgraduate studentships every year since 2011.

Swansea University’s participation in the Wales DTP ensures that our Human Geography postgraduate research students benefit from superb research training with excellent networking and other career-development opportunities. As a Human Geographer, you will be offered a mix of generic research training (such as qualitative and quantitative research methods, and research ethics) and subject-specific research training, where we focus on applying research methods to geographical topics.

The Wales DTP is part of a national network of 14 accredited Doctoral Training Partnerships across the UK, judged by the ESRC to deliver outstanding postgraduate training provision in the social and economic sciences.
