1. Applying for accommodation

UK students

Due to demand we will only be able to offer a limited number of places in accommodation to UK postgraduate students. Most of these will be in University Managed Properties. However UK postgraduate students will also be eligible to apply for one of the positions of Welfare Wardens. The University will offer all other postgraduate students assistance in finding suitable private sector accommodation.

EU and International students

A room in university residence is guaranteed to new international postgraduates who:-

Hold a firm offer of a postgraduate place on a full time course;

Make an application for accommodation; and

Confirm attendance at Swansea by 30 June.

Places will be allocated on a date order basis until all vacancies are filled. Once an offer has been sent students have seven days to accept and pay the deposit which forms part of the acceptance. If the offer is not accepted within this time frame the room is re-offered to another student.

Whilst every attempt will be made to offer the preferred accommodation choice, places in accommodation are offered on a first come first served basis therefore, no guarantee of specific accommodation can be given in advance.

Places are offered for the full academic year of the course.

2. Tuition Fees

UK/EU Students

Tuition fees are payable in full at enrolment but the University is aware of the financial burden that may arise. We offer what we believe to be a very fair instalment plan that helps spread the burden of fee payments.

International Students

All international students must pay a deposit of £2,000 to secure their place and obtain a CAS statement. This deposit is refundable only in the event of the Government refusing to grant a UK visa under the Points Based System of Immigration, or a student failing to meet the University's entry requirements. This deposit will count towards the payment of tuition fees and is not an additional sum charged above the tuition fee quoted in offer letters.

The remainder of the Tuition fees can either be paid in full before enrolment (2% discount will be offered) or can be paid in two instalments. 50% of your annual tuition fee must be paid at or before enrolment and the remaining 50% should be paid no later than February (Postgraduate Taught Programmes) or April (Postgraduate Research Programme Students).

3. Enrolment

Details of enrolment are sent out to new students from mid-August onwards. UK and EU students have the opportunity to enrol online from mid-September.

When will I find out if my conditional offer has become unconditional?

  • If you meet the exact terms of your offer your place will be confirmed as unconditional within two working days from receipt of your results. Home/EU applicants will receive an email notifying them that their offer of a place has been confirmed and if required for official purposes, they can request an unconditional statement. All international students are issued with an unconditional statement once their results have been processed and place confirmed.

It is likely to take longer than two working days to make a decision on your application if you have NOT met the exact terms of your offer as the Admissions Office will need to discuss your application with the appropriate academic Admissions Tutor.

What happens if I miss the conditions of my offer?

  • We will review your application if you have missed the conditions of your offer and it may still be possible to confirm your place. You should, therefore, ensure that you email your results to as soon as they are available. Whether we will be able to confirm your place depends on how close to the conditions your results are, as well as the number of students who have met their conditions and, therefore, on how many places we have remaining.

 How do I apply for an ATAS Clearance Certificate?

  • If you have applied for a taught Master's degree or research programme for which ATAS clearance is required we will provide you guidance on how to apply for an ATAS Clearance Certificate with your offer letter* (*As candidates can only apply for ATAS clearance within 6 months of the start of their programme, we will send this information for taught master's candidates from April onwards, in the year of admission.) You will need to apply for ATAS clearance before applying for your student visa. Please see the ATAS website for an application form and details of how to apply.
    You must allow sufficient time for your University application to be considered and proceed in time for you to apply for ATAS clearance and your Tier 4 Visa. For example, for Masters' courses starting in September, applications should be received by 31 July at the latest. Research applicants will need to leave more time for their application to be considered.

Do I need to pay a deposit?

If a government or company are paying your fees you should ask them for a letter confirming this. You would not normally have to pay a deposit if you are receiving financial support from an official sponsor or via a US Federal Loan. Unfortunately we do not accept parents or family as sponsors and these are not acceptable for visa purposes.

Have you received my deposit? Will I receive a receipt?

  • Deposit payments can take a number of days to clear and for the Finance Department to inform the Admissions Office of your payment. It is possible that the Admissions Office may only be informed of your deposit payment 5-10 working days after it has been paid.
  • Receipts can be issued by the Finance Department on request.

If you pay your deposit (or full fees prior to enrolment) via bank transfer, cheque or banker's draft, email for a receipt. They will need your 6-digit student number, the bank's name, the date of payment and amount.

If you pay in person by cheque, card or cash, you will be given a receipt when you pay.

I am arriving from overseas. Can I be met at the airport?

  • Yes, if you arrive the weekend before main enrolment in September. We want to make sure that your first journey to Swansea is as smooth as possible, so for a small charge, we offer a meet and greet airport pick up service to all new International and EU students from London Heathrow Airport.
