Flintec is a world leading manufacture in the precision weight measurements sector. We produce precision products for a range of different industries, including medical, retail and industry.
In 1968, two Swedish engineers established a weighing scale design company. Since then, the company has expanded across multiple continents investing in technologies, staff and knowledge.
Over the past few years, Flintec has seen a rise in demand for its loadcells, which has applied pressure on our engineering design hubs to innovate and produce new technology. Some of the technology inherent to Flintec includes the method of producing strain gauges as well as loadcell designs.
Current strain gauge manufacturing techniques for loadcell manufacture, require the manufacturer to procure thin foil Constantan – which is a copper-nickel alloy. Constantan is used for strain gauges due to its high resistance that is constant over a wider range of temperatures.
The strain gauge is incorporated into a Wheatstone bridges circuit, that is balanced and compensated for variations in temperature once installed into the loadcell. The bonding and positioning of the strain gauge is critical to minimising detrimental changes in performance, that can affect the non-linear behaviour of the signal output and the detection of mechanical hysteresis.
Flintec is now required to begin further research and development into key areas to ensure its global leading status is maintained and global competitiveness is improved upon.
The focus of this project will be to evaluate and improve on our current strain gauge manufacturing processes, considering new processing methods and materials. Findings from the project should allow Flintec to scale into production, with a view of speeding up and automating manufacture.

Candidates should hold an Engineering or Physical Sciences degree with a minimum classification level of 2:1 or equivalent relevant experience. This project would be suitable for someone with a degree in chemistry, physics, or materials engineering.
