The Chemical Engineering MSc course provides opportunity for further study at master’s level which expands the breadth and depth of chemical engineering taught content.

The course contains a mix of compulsory modules and further options which are selected by the student. Engineering content focuses upon important process engineering themes such as separation processes, fluid systems, mass transfer and material properties, all of which build upon the range of research strengths in the College of Engineering (CoE). As a student on the master's course in chemical engineering, you will have the opportunity to advance your technical knowledge and competencies which can lead to further research or a career in the chemical engineering sector or allied industries.

Part 1 of the MSc programme comprises 120 credits of taught modules, subject areas include:-

  • Water and wastewater engineering
  • Non-Newtonian fluid mechanics
  • Desalination
  • Colloid and interface science
  • Membrane technology
  • Research Skills

Further options extend to themes in biochemical engineering, environmental legislation, nanomedicine, optimisation, pollutant transport and polymer properties.

In Part 2 of the programme students undertake a 60 credit research project. Examples of research themes offered in previous years include:-

  • Analysis of water treatment systems
  • Evaluation of pilot-scale unit operations
  • Fate of plastic pollution in the natural environment
  • Energy storage systems
  • Photovoltaic materials and manufacturing technology
  • Rheological characterization of biomedical materials
  • Fabrication of carbon nanotubes
  • Bench-scale pyrolysis reactor systems
  • Modeling of fluid mixing systems
  • Ink formulation and industrial coating processes
  • Nanotechnology (targeted drug delivery, electrocatalytic applications etc.)
  • Fluid penetration in structured media
  • Energy requirements in desalination processes
  • Production methods for zeolite catalysts
  • Carbon sequestration

Dissertation opportunities are supported by Chemical Engineering staff from several major research groups including the Multidisciplinary Nanotechnology Centre (MNC), Complex Fluids, WCPC, the Materials Research Centre (MRC) and CWATER, e.g. World-leading research finding solutions to the world's water shortages. Project titles vary from year to year and are subject to availability.

Entry Requirements

The entry requirement for the MSc Chemical Engineering is a first or a second class honours degree in Chemical Engineering or closely related discipline. Desirable criteria includes prior experience of Chemical Engineering Design projects.

Tuition Fees

Annual tuition fees for entry in the academic year 2019/20 are as follows:

Additional Costs

The tuition fees for the MSc Chemical Engineering course do not cover costs incurred personally by the student such as the purchase of books or stationery, printing or photocopying costs.


The Chemical Engineering MSc programme at Swansea University is accredited by the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) on behalf of the Engineering Council for the purposes of partially meeting the educational requirements for Further Learning (F-level) for Engineering Council registration as a Chartered Engineer for those who have already satisfied the associated IChemE criteria at B-level.

Accreditation is a mark of assurance that the degree meets the standards set by the Engineering Council in the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC). Some employers recruit preferentially from accredited degrees, and an accredited degree is likely to be recognised by other countries that are signatories to international accords.
