Boxing will have its Swansea v Cardiff Varsity debut this year as thirteen Swansea boxers – twelve men and one woman, face their opponents at Cardiff University Union on Monday 22 April at 7 pm.

Swansea has already had a great start to the year with Josh Osborne winning the gold medal in the BUCS (British Universities and Colleges Sport) Super Heavyweight category in March.

Varsity 2013Avoen Perryman, head coach said, “The Swansea University squad hope that a Varsity triumph will build on Josh’s success. We have been training hard and hope to mark our Varsity debut in style by bringing the title home to Swansea.”

Avoen, a doctoral research student at Swansea University, set up the Boxing Club in November 2007, when he was a first year Criminology undergraduate. Avoen, who has fought and coached boxing since his teens says just a few people were involved when the club started but today it boasts 150 members.

Avoen said: “I love running this club and making a difference to people's University experience, and possibly to their lives. Three of our former boxers are now boxing coaches and a couple who met at the club are now engaged!”

The club currently trains at the University Sport Centre and the Warehouse Gym in Swansea.  But plans for the next academic year include a new gym in the Sandfields area of the city with £25k worth of funding from UK charity 'Sported'.

Avoen said: “We want young people from the city come to our gym, get fit, develop boxing skills and learn the value of discipline.  We hope that as undergraduate and postgraduate students, we can act as mentors to our younger members.

“We want this gym to become a great facility for the community and bring students and local youngsters together to generate a real community spirit, increase charitable activities and also help reduce anti-social behaviour in the area.”
