春节联欢晚会 (Chinese New Year Celebrations)

The Swansea University Chinese Society will be welcoming in the Snake and saying goodbye to the Dragon at its first ever celebration of the Chinese New Year.

The Taliesin Arts Centre will be hosting the Society’s Chinese New Year Show 2012/13 on Friday 8th February at 7.30pm. The evening will be a colourful mix of dance 舞蹈, singing 唱歌, Kung-Fu 功夫, Chinese Harp 古筝, comedy 小品 and discussion 相声. There will also be a fashion show of ancient Chinese dress 服装展示.

Mahaboob Basha, International and Overseas Student Officer said: “ The Students union is proud to organise the Chinese New Year celebrations with the support of the university. We also ensure all cultural and ethnic students have a  wonderful time during their stay in Swansea. “

Chinese New Year 2013 will be the Year of the Snake, ushering out 2012, the Year of the Dragon.  Chinese New Year, which is also known as Spring Festival or Lunar New Year is the most important holiday on the Chinese calendar and also the longest. It begins on the day of the new moon which is the first day of the first month of the year according to the Chinese calendar and ends on the full moon 15 days later culminating in a traditional Lantern Festival. Chinese New Year in 2013 begins on February 10th and culminates in Lantern Festival on February 24th, 2013.

The Swansea University Chinese Society (SUCS), which began in August 2011 under the umbrella of the Student Union, is run by a group of Chinese students from Swansea University who enjoy living in Swansea and hope to spread the Chinese motivation into the University and the whole city. It aims to help Chinese students get involved into the life in Swansea, and share with non-Chinese friend’s information about the Chinese culture and language.

The SUCS is the one of the largest international student’s society on campus with more than 700 signed up members and 200 paid members. SUCS won the Swansea University “best society award” in 2011-12. The Chinese society is popular on Weibo (Chinese micro blogging website) with 21925 fans.
