Varsity squad unveiled

Swansea University Rugby team today announced their 32-man squad to play in the Welsh Varsity match on April 9 at the Millennium Stadium.

The side features plenty of experience from previous winning Varsity teams. It features four players from the recent Wales Under 20s Six Nations campaign and two players from the Welsh 7s team.

“I’m really happy with this year’s team, there is a real balance through the squad and a lot of experience with over 60 per cent of the players playing regularly in the Welsh Premiership,” said head coach Richard Lancaster, who leads the team for his eigth Varsity match.

‌“We have already been working hard as a squad in preparing for the game but will really ramp things up over the next couple of weeks now that the squad has been announced. We will go into the game confident yet respectful of the threats Cardiff University pose. One thing is certain - it will be a great spectacle with over 10,000 tickets having been sold already.”

Some tickets are still available for the game from the Students Union website or from Fulton Outfitters on campus.

The team is supported by main sponsor St Modwen. Vice-Chancellor Professor Richard B Davies, said: “Varsity is one of the most exciting events in our university calendar; a wonderful part of the student experience on offer at Swansea. Every year, many students take part in this unique event, and many more travel to lend vocal support to the individuals and teams competing.

“St. Modwen are our key partners in delivering our new Bay Campus, which will further enhance student experience by providing a first-class space for teaching and learning. It is great news that they are now our partners in Varsity too and we look forward to further success on and off the pitch.”

Rupert Joseland, St. Modwen’s Regional Director (Wales), said: “St. Modwen, the UK’s leading regeneration specialist, is Swansea University’s partner developer of the new £450 million Bay Campus and we are delighted to further support the University and its 15,000 students, as its official sponsor of the Welsh Varsity Cymru 2014.”
