This is an introductory module to the structure and function of the human body, delivered with a focus on healthcare science.
This module provides an introduction to aspects of basic science which are important for the neurosensory science student to learn.
Introduction to Cardiovascular Science
This module will introduce students to the theory and practice of cardiovascular science. Students will apply knowledge of anatomy, physiology and instrumentation to understand the principles and techniques of basic diagnostic investigations. This will be expanded in subsequent cardiology modules in order to develop the skills and attitudes required for safe and effective practice.
CVRS Patient Pathways and Work-Based Training
This module will provide students with an opportunity to develop the skills and attitudes needed to be a healthcare science practitioner. Learning is centred on patient presentation and common patient pathways through the health service. Clinical placements will contextualize learning, offer real-life experience and enable students to apply taught professional practice outcomes in order to practise safely. Students will begin a portfolio of evidence and will be required to complete specified sections of the professional training manual.
Pathophysiology of Common Cardiovascular and Respiratory Conditions
This module will prepare students for their role in clinical practice by ensuring they understand the pathophysiology of common conditions that result in referral to cardiovascular, respiratory and sleep services.
Measurement of Resting Cardiovascular Function
This module builds on knowledge and skills gained in SHC157 Introduction to Cardiovascular Science. Students will explore electrocardiography and blood pressure recording in greater depth with a particular focus on differentiation of normal and abnormal findings. Skills labs will allow students to develop competence in the clinical techniques necessary for placement activity.
Measurement of Cardiovascular Function During Provocation Testing
This module builds on knowledge and skills gained in SHC157 Introduction to Cardiovascular Science. Students will explore ambulatory and exercise electrocardiography as well as ambulatory blood pressure recording. Skills labs will allow students to develop competence in the clinical techniques necessary for placement activity.
Healthcare Science Research Project
This module will facilitate the planning, execution and dissemination of a research project with direct relevance to the clinical specialism. Students will be expected to plan, execute and disseminate a literature review, audit or service improvement project.
Healthcare Science Work Based Placement 2
The aim of the module is to broaden the student experience of clinical practice in their specialism. This experience will ensure that on graduation, the student can undertake the breadth of practice expected of a newly qualified healthcare science practitioner.
This module builds on the skills and knowledge gained during level 1 and 2 cardiology modules. Students will explore the principles and practice of invasive pressure monitoring and cardiac interventions in the catheter laboratory. Pathophysiology knowledge will be advanced and related to haemodynamic data. Students will be expected to critically analyse data and formulate provisional diagnoses.
Arrhythmia Diagnosis and Management
This module build on the skills and knowledge gained during level 1 and 2 cardiology modules. Students will explore the principles and practice of arrhythmia diagnosis and management. There is a strong focus on advancing ECG interpretation skills and on bradycardia device implantation. Pathophysiology knowledge will be advanced and related to arrhythmias. Students will be expected to critically analyse data and formulate reports.
Evidence-Based Practice in Cardiology
The module will prepare students for their professional role as a healthcare science practitioner in Cardiology. Students will gain an understanding of their role in the patient pathway and the importance of evidence-based practice that considers patient-centred care.
Anatomy and Physiology 1
This module utilises lecture and laboratory based study to explore the anatomy and physiology of the major body systems. Furthermore, this module will be used to underpin the knowledge required to understand clinical presentation, diagnosis and osteopathic management of pathological conditions.
Introduction to Health Sciences
This module will introduce the student to normal anatomy and physiology, key sociological and psychological concepts and principles of health promotion. Completion of this module supports the student in acquiring the knowledge to apply understanding of abnormal physiology to patient physical states. Through a variety of learning strategies the student is supported to appreciate how health education and health promotion can have a positive effect upon patient wellbeing.
Foundations in Physiology and Health Assessment
This module provides an introduction to the principles and practices of advanced practice. It is suitable for experienced clinical nurses or other allied health professionals who wish to expand their clinical skills and knowledge. This module will introduce students to the following subjects: anatomy, physiology, history taking, consultation skills, general examination and systems examination.
Human Anatomy and Physiology 1
This module uses lecture and laboratory based study to explore the anatomy and physiology of the major organs and organ systems of the human body. Teaching will begin with the molecular and cellular basis of life, utilising appropriate techniques to illustrate the structure of organelles, cells and tissues. The major organs and organ systems will be examined and their role in homeostasis explained, with the importance of the interplay between different organs emphasised.
Researching Educational Practice
This module aims to develop participants¿ awareness of the key issues, principles and practice of educational research and to provide the knowledge and understanding required to conduct small-scale research into their own practice.
