    This is an introductory module that prepares students for work in the healthcare science clinical practice environment.

  • SHC330 Professional Practice 3

    This is a module that builds upon SHC150 Professional Practice 1 and SHC230 Professional Practice 2 from years 1 and 2 to provide the student with an in depth understanding of professional practice as it applies to healthcare science.

  • SHG3041 Fundamentals of Community Practice

    This module frontloads the Specialist Practice Qualification in District Nursing (SPDN) and provides an overview of current issues which are relevant to those working in all areas of community nursing. There are four themes incorporated in the module where each theme has a theoretical and clinical outcome. The themes are: Community as the Context of Care, Professional Role and Accountability, Clinical Practice in the community, The Family (sociological and psychological perspectives). A Practice Teacher (PT) or Sign-Off Mentor (SOM) is required to support the student through the practice component. There must be an up-to-date educational audit available within the practice setting.

  • SHN127 What is Nursing? (Adult)

    This module will allow students to gain insight into the clinical decision making process its importance in planning safe and effective care to a range of service users/clients. The module will explore the development of nursing and its values. The theories of nursing and the nursing process will be introduced.

  • SHN128 Developing Nursing Knowledge (Adult)

    This module aims to equip student nurses to work with individuals, service users, carers and the multi disciplinary team when planning and providing appropriate evidence based care. The concepts of Clinical Governance and clinical assessment and decision making will be explored. The module will build on previous knowledge to facilitate the development of theoretical and practical knowledge so that the individual can recognise and act when there is a risk to the client/service user of physical or mental health problems across the lifespan.

    This core module addresses specific keys areas relating to the fundamentals of nursing practice and clinical exposure. The module will introduce students to the profession of nursing, the underpinning values of the nursing profession and the professional codes of practice. The importance of patient dignity, respect, care and compassion will be integrated throughout the module and related to safe, person-centred care. The module will introduce the students to meeting the client/service user¿s physical and emotional needs.

    The philosophy of the module is the belief that continued development underpins professional practice. Throughout their professional lives, qualified nurses need to take responsibility for their own learning and development. In order to achieve this, they need to be able to recognise their learning and developmental needs, developing appropriate strategies to fulfil them. Development encompasses both personal and professional aspects as one cannot be separated from the other. This module draws on the content of other modules within the year and experiences in practice to introduce the concept of professional practice. The students will demonstrate this learning through the medium of a portfolio and by producing a patchwork text.

    Health promotion and public health are essential components of the nurse‿s role. This module aims to provide students with an understanding of public health development, the nurse‿s role and priorities for action such as inequalities, advocacy and partnership working. Key principles of health promotion and its role within public health will also be explored. The module will also provide students with knowledge of how to promote health within practice across the lifespan in a variety of settings.

  • SHN3059 Managing Complex Care in Rapidly Changing Situations (Mental Health)

    This module aims to give an overview of specialist aspects of mental health nursing practice, especially when care can be considered complex and situations rapidly change. The module also aims to give a greater insight into the application of legal, ethical and professional issues to practice. This module draws on the content of modules within Years 1 and 2 and experiences in practice to consolidate the knowledge, skills and attitude for professional practice in the field of mental health nursing.

  • SHNM00 Introduction to Nursing (Adult)

    This module will enable students to develop the knowledge, skills and professional values that underpin safe, effective, evidence-based practice. A range of teaching methods will be used to develop fundamental nursing skills including, bio science, infection prevention and control, moving and handling; vital signs; recognition and response to abnormal parameters; nursing documentation; therapeutic management of aggression and de-escalation; fundamental care delivery; basic life support; and introduction to medicines management. Students will learn about historical and contemporary nursing practices and explore how nursing will develop in the future.

  • SHNM21 Fundamentals of Community Practice

    This module frontloads the MSc Specialist Practice District Nursing (SPDN) programme, providing an overview of current issues which are relevant to those working in all areas of community nursing. It is an All Wales module developed through collaboration with the commissioners' and Higher Education Institutes across Wales. There are four themes incorporated in the module where each theme has a theoretical and clinical outcome. The themes are: Community as the Context of Care, Professional Role and Accountability, Clinical Practice in the community, The Family (sociological and psychological perspectives). A sign off mentor or Practice Teacher (PT) will support each student in a practice setting that has undergone an educational audit.

  • SHNM41 Promoting Health and Preventing Illness (Mental Health)

    This module aims to provide students with an in depth understanding of public health development, the nurse¿s role and priorities for action such as inequalities, advocacy and partnership working. Key principles of health promotion and its role within public health will be explored within practice across the lifespan in a variety of settings. A range of blended learning teaching approaches will be used within the module. Online learning resources are supported through the use of Canvas. Students will use a virtual family to further explore the dimensions of health and work together on a collaborative Wiki to explore how to promote the health of the people in their care. Students will have the opportunity to attend a clinical placement in either a hospital or community setting.
