Introduction to Social Work Law
This is a core module for the BSc (Hons) Social Work programme. At an introductory level, this module provides an overview of the legal processes and frameworks that inform and guide social work practice in the UK and, more specifically, Wales. This includes an introduction to the meaning and classification of law, the legislative process, devolution and its implications for the administration of justice in Wales. It will also consider the court structure (civil and criminal) and the personnel of the law and their relationship with social workers. Finally, present laws dealing with equality and discrimination will be considered in the context of developing an anti-oppressive approach to practice. Students will be encouraged to begin to critically appraise the strengths and limitations of legal frameworks in terms of human rights implications and in relation to issues of equality.

Legal issues in Social Work and Social Care
This module examines the legal frameworks that shape and regulate decision making in social care and social work. It considers how social workers can make use of law in a way that enables positive and socially just change, and examines the value of law from a variety of perspectives, including service users and professionals. The module covers a range of legal issues relating to social work and social care practice, including child welfare, youth justice and community care. Emphasis is given to the practical application of legal frameworks and human rights considerations to case scenarios. Particular attention is paid to how the Human Rights Act 1998 and anti-discrimination legislation informs practice.

This module will examine historical, cultural and ethical issues in relation to both the safeguarding of children and young people and their rights. It will examine the relevant legislation and policy in relation to both areas and evaluate the current safeguarding agenda and implementation of rights in the UK. The cross cultural context of both areas will also be discussed.
It will be a relevant to practitioners working with children across a range of health, social and educational settings.

This module provides students with theoretical knowledge and understanding of safeguarding within health and social care. This is a broad introduction to safeguarding and will include the development of relevant legal frameworks and guidance and the responsibilities of different professional groups and agencies to work together to safeguard children, young people and vulnerable adults.

Health Law and Practice
This module provides an introduction to the role of law in health care and critically examines how the law regulates clinical practice. It will examine how the English Legal System provides a framework for the National Health Service and considers how patients¿ rights are engaged through Human Rights Law, Trespass, the law of obligations as well as examine the development of the common law in other areas including negligence, criminal law and protective laws. Students will be introduced to and become familiar with statute law and case law and will discover how these laws apply in health and social care.

The module is intended to allow nurses to study the theoretical and practical aspects of the contemporary role of the nurse. This module has been designed to develop the student¿s understanding and application of altered health, complex childbearing anatomy and physiology, relevant psycho-social issues and midwifery care provision across the entire childbearing continuum. This includes a range of psycho-social and health complexities impacting on or associated with childbearing women, neonates and their families. Content covered offers the student an overview of these complex processes on childbearing, childbirth and the postnatal period with a specific focus on further developing midwifery knowledge and skills.
