  • PPS107 Foundations in Human Anatomy, Physiology and Pathophysiology

    This module will provide an introduction to the anatomy and physiology of the major organ systems as well as providing an overview of some common diseases.

  • PPS208 Human Anatomy, Physiology and Pathophysiology II

    This module will build upon the underpinning knowledge gained in the compulsory year I module PPS107 Foundations in Human Anatomy, Physiology and Pathophysiology. It will provide the opportunity for students to develop and further their understanding of human anatomy and physiology to an advanced level. It will also allow the student to a gain more detailed knowledge of some of common diseases seen in the general population and the current treatment options available.

  • SHC151 Anatomy and Physiology for Healthcare Science

    This is an introductory module to the structure and function of the human body, delivered with a focus on healthcare science.

  • SHC152 Pathophysiology for Healthcare Science

    This is an introductory module to the structure and function of the human body and how it is affected by disease, delivered with a focus on healthcare science.

  • SHC238 Pathophysiology of Common Cardiovascular and Respiratory Conditions

    This module will prepare students for their role in clinical practice by ensuring they understand the pathophysiology of common conditions that result in referral to cardiovascular, respiratory and sleep services.

  • SHC314 Introduction to Pathology and Therapeutics for Health Scientists

    This module builds upon existing scientific and clinical knowledge, carrying on the progression to application of knowledge to the clinical environment. Pharmacological aspects of care and management will be incorporated. Students will be encouraged to scrutinize their own practice and discuss rationales for patient management by applying their knowledge of pharmacology and pathophysiology via group presentations.

  • SHF100 Anatomy and Physiology 2

    This module aims to provide an understanding of the structure and function of the key systems which is a core requirement of osteopathic medicine. This module builds upon knowledge introduced in SHF109 Anatomy and Physiology 1, and develops the understanding of the structure and functions of the key systems of the body. This knowledge will underpin the pathophysiology and therapeutics covered in Year 2.

  • SHF109 Anatomy and Physiology 1

    This module utilises lecture and laboratory based study to explore the anatomy and physiology of the major body systems. Furthermore, this module will be used to underpin the knowledge required to understand clinical presentation, diagnosis and osteopathic management of pathological conditions.

  • SHF206 Pathophysiology and Therapeutics 2

    This module will explore the processes underlying pathological chronic conditions, such as metabolism, cancer and degeneration. Common conditions affecting whole body systems, such as musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, respiratory, endocrine, renal and gastro-intestinal, will be discussed in terms of pathogenesis, clinical presentations, impact upon the patient and its therapeutic management.

  • SHG130 Foundations in Human Anatomy and Physiology for Health and Social Care

    This module is designed to meet the specific needs of students on the BSc Health and Social Care degree. Unlike current anatomy and physiology modules it assumes no prior knowledge of the subject material and provides an overview of the structure and function of each organ system. The module enhances material delivered in lead lectures with laboratory sessions and makes use of the pre-existing Visual Bioscience software developed by the department. The module will also give an overview of common medical conditions.

  • SHG346 Foundations in Physiology and Health Assessment

    This module provides an introduction to the principles and practices of advanced practice. It is suitable for experienced clinical nurses or other allied health professionals who wish to expand their clinical skills and knowledge. This module will introduce students to the following subjects: anatomy, physiology, history taking, consultation skills, general examination and systems examination.

  • SHGM06 Pharmacology Principles and Practice (HCPC)

    The module introduces the principles and practices of pharmacology which are vital requirements for independent/supplementary prescribing. It will enable the practitioner to appraise the relevant sources of information advice and support available and apply them to make appropriate decisions in prescribing practice. This module will provide an opportunity for multidisciplinary learning with other professionals studying to become non-medical prescribers.

  • SHN125 Introduction to the Fundamentals of Nursing Practice (Adult)

    This core module addresses specific keys areas relating to the fundamentals of nursing practice and clinical exposure encompassing mandatory training. The module will introduce students to the profession of nursing, the underpinning values of the nursing profession and the professional codes of practice. The importance of patient dignity, respect, care and compassion will be integrated throughout the module and related to safe, person-centred care. The module will introduce the students to meeting the client/service user¿s physical and emotional needs.

  • SHN128 Developing Nursing Knowledge (Adult)

    This module aims to equip student nurses to work with individuals, service users, carers and the multi disciplinary team when planning and providing appropriate evidence based care. The concepts of Clinical Governance and clinical assessment and decision making will be explored. The module will build on previous knowledge to facilitate the development of theoretical and practical knowledge so that the individual can recognise and act when there is a risk to the client/service user of physical or mental health problems across the lifespan.

    Health promotion and public health are essential components of the nurse‿s role. This module aims to provide students with an understanding of public health development, the nurse‿s role and priorities for action such as inequalities, advocacy and partnership working. Key principles of health promotion and its role within public health will also be explored. The module will also provide students with knowledge of how to promote health within practice across the lifespan in a variety of settings.

  • SHN274 Developing the Practice of Nursing (Adult)

    The philosophy of this core module is the belief that continued development underpins professional practice. Throughout their professional lives, qualified nurses need to take responsibility for their own learning and development. In order to achieve this, they need to be able to recognise their learning and developmental needs, developing appropriate strategies to fulfil them. Development encompasses both personal and professional aspects as one cannot be separated from the other. This module draws on the content of other modules within the year and on experiences in practice in order to develop the concept of professional practice. Students will demonstrate this learning through the medium of a portfolio and by producing a patchwork text.

  • SHNM00 Introduction to Nursing (Adult)

    This module will enable students to develop the knowledge, skills and professional values that underpin safe, effective, evidence-based practice. A range of teaching methods will be used to develop fundamental nursing skills including, bio science, infection prevention and control, moving and handling; vital signs; recognition and response to abnormal parameters; nursing documentation; therapeutic management of aggression and de-escalation; fundamental care delivery; basic life support; and introduction to medicines management. Students will learn about historical and contemporary nursing practices and explore how nursing will develop in the future.

  • SHP100 Applied Human Biology

    This module will introduce the student to applied biological sciences. The module will begin with an exploration of the structure and function of the major organic compounds found in the human body, moving on to aspects of cellular physiology and basic pharmacology.

  • SHP104 Human Anatomy and Physiology 1

    This module uses lecture and laboratory based study to explore the anatomy and physiology of the major organs and organ systems of the human body. Teaching will begin with the molecular and cellular basis of life, utilising appropriate techniques to illustrate the structure of organelles, cells and tissues. The major organs and organ systems will be examined and their role in homeostasis explained, with the importance of the interplay between different organs emphasised.

  • SHP207 Human Anatomy and Physiology II

    This module will develop knowledge of human anatomy and physiology. Teaching will build upon the lecture material delivered in year 1. The major organs and organ systems will be examined in detail, including relevant physical and biochemical processes.

  • SHP209 Pathophysiology 1 - Diseases and Disorders of the Vital Organs

    This level 5 module builds upon existing scientific knowledge and a comprehensive understanding of anatomy and physiology of the human body, obtained in level 4. This new module focuses primarily on the five vital organs (the brain, the heart, the lungs, the liver and the kidneys), and covers in depth, the pathophysiology of each organ, providing details of the diseases and disorders which may affect these key organs.

  • SHP210 Pathophysiology 2 - Abnormal States and Disease

    This level 5 module builds upon existing scientific knowledge and a comprehensive understanding of anatomy and physiology of the human body, obtained in level 4. This new module focuses on abnormal states and pathophysiology of many of the body¿s organs and systems, and covers in depth, diseases and disorders which are clinically observed in these systems.

    This level 6 module will cover the pathophysiology of the following organ systems and disease e.g. ¿ Nervous System ¿ Endocrine System ¿ Renal System ¿ Immunology ¿ Cancer

  • SHP354 Systems Physiology and Common Pathologies

    This module builds on the students¿ knowledge and understanding of human physiological processes which are fundamental to health and wellbeing. Students should extend their comprehension of systems failure and the adverse effect this has on maintenance of health. Students should have a basic understanding of human anatomy and physiology.

  • SHVM00 Applied Anatomy and Pathophysiology for Long Term Chronic Conditions Management

    This module is used to underpin the applied knowledge required to understand the clinical presentation and management of specific long term and chronic conditions.
