Renewable Energy

In March 2013 the University adopted (at SMT and Finance Committee) its Carbon Management Plan 2010 – 2020. In 2015 the University, previously a single campus based at Singleton Park, undertook a substantial £450m, 65 acre expansion project opening the Bay Campus, becoming a dual campus university. Due to this substantial change in University facilities and population it was agreed by HEFCW and Swansea University that 2015 – 2016 be established as the relevant representative CMP baseline year.

 

 

Carbon Management Plan 2016-2026 , was developed in line with HEFCW & HEFCE requirements, building on the original 2013 Carbon Management Plan supported by the Carbon Trust.

Progress against the plan is reported annually as part of the Management Review undertaken alongside our ISO14001 Environmental Management System. (See Carbon Management Plan Governance Slide). This is undertaken at the SHE Committee, chaired by the University Registrar and Chief Operating Officer, and including cross organisational staff and student representation, alongside all three of the University’s trade unions.

The Carbon Management Plan covers the following emissions of the University and resets the baseline to 2015/16, setting new SMART carbon reduction targets for 2026 for Scope 1, 2 & 3 emissions:

The Carbon Management Plan provides:

  • Clearly defined short, medium and long term SMART carbon reduction targets (e.g. 3.5% annually and 35% by 2026).
  • A framework of carbon reduction measures, including investments required & expected savings (e.g. lower carbon development strategy and lower carbon mind set including communications and training).
  • Clarity on carbon management governance, roles and responsibilities.
  • A commitment to monitor and structure carbon reporting progress towards the targets publically annually (i.e. Scope 1, 2 and 3).
  • Signposts to supporting documentation (e.g. Sustainability Strategy and Travel Plan)
  • Reports, targets and sets out reduction measures for scope 3 emissions.

Opportunities for Student and Staff Engagement in Carbon Management

“A Lower Carbon Mind Set”, one of our five core carbon management plan reduction themes focuses on plans for student and staff engagement in carbon monitoring, management and reduction.

We recognise that we must engage the whole university community in carbon management in order to achieve our goal of lowering carbon emissions by 35% by 2026. Though the following projects we are unlocking our student and staff potential to lower our energy consumption, whilst informing and inspiring future generations to have a lower carbon mind set!

The Student Energy Project (TSEP) at Swansea University,

Student Energy Project

We were the first university in Wales to run the energy-saving scheme, known as The Student Energy Project (TSEP) at Singleton Campus halls of residence. TSEP encourages students to monitor their consumption and reduce their energy usage though a range of incentives and then shares the savings with participants through vouchers and work placements.

The project has been in effect since 2016 at our Singleton halls of residence. Taking data from meter readings in every building, energy savings are calculated based on last year’s readings. These savings equal points; students can exchange for vouchers on the TSEP website.  In the first year of operation TSEP recorded a 4% lowering of our electrical energy consumption, equating to 60,000 kWh of savings.

TSEP recruits student ‘reps’ from each block to talk to each student and encourage them to sign up to TSEP and reduce their use of electricity and water.

In return the reps receive a free hoodie, cash bonuses and work experience in an energy sector company – an invaluable opportunity for many students. As well as providing numerous benefits to students, TSEP is expected to lower the University’s carbon footprint and provide energy cost-savings.

Tips include:

  • Turning off lights and making use of natural light
  • Turning off appliances when not in use
  • Reducing shower time

Blackout - Swansea University’s Switch it off campaign

Every year we run a campaign to remind staff and students to switch off appliances, save energy and lower our carbon emissions. During the campaign we hold a blackout event where a big group staff and student volunteers return to the University buildings after dark to check on everyone’s efforts to switch off for the weekend. We leave sweets for those who switched off and polite reminders for those who need more encouragement!

Last year Blackout saved 4% when compared to a similar earlier weekend. The campaign serves as a great reminder to switch off and is also a fantastic way for our staff and students to socialise and gain experience supporting the student Sustainability Award and staff SWell engagement programme.

Staff SWell and Carbon Reduction

Through the University’s SWell programme we reward employees for taking a range of everyday sustainable and wellbeing related actions.

One of the eight activity themes on SWell is “My Footprint”. Staff can earn a £5 gift voucher if they gain over 4000 points by carrying out routine activities, reducing their carbon footprint and helping the university in managing carbon and achieving our 35% reduction target.

Carbon reduction is a common thread woven through many of our other SWell engagement activities. Below is a list of other activities on SWell where carbon reduction is a driver.

Electricity from Renewable Sources

We are backed by electricity generated from renewable sources

Swansea University pays a renewables tariff for 100% of our grid electricity. This means we fund our electricity consumption to be supplied to the grid from renewables.
